Cheboygan, Michigan

Cheboygan is the county seat of Cheboygan County. Population: 4,999. City Hall: 403 N. Huron St., Cheboygan, MI 49721, (231) 627-9931. In 1844, Jacob Sammons (1804-1859), a cooper from Fort Mackinac, set out in his scow to seek his fortune on a site of his own. He chose this old Indian camping ground (Shabwegan, they had called it), built his cabin, plied his trade and recruited other settlers and craftsmen. Given a post office as Duncan in 1846, changed to Cheboygan in 1870. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1889. The Chippewas were also called Cehboys and the term gan meant water, so Cheboygan may mean Chippewa Water, namely the river which now bears that name and from which the county and the city took their name.  Cheboygan, Michigan is located on the shores of Lake Huron and the banks of the Cheboygan River. Cheboygan is an Indian name meaning “through passage” referring to the 38.2 mile Inland Waterway Route. Cheboygan is a year round community providing entertainment and activities for our visitors to participate in. We have cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, area fishing opportunities, boating, beaches, a buffalo ranch, indoor ice pavilion, craft shows, concerts in the park, parade, a county museum, elk viewing, fall color tours, lighthouses along our Lake Huron shoreline and we are home of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw which gives tours during the summer months. The Opera House is a 582 seat facility, open all year that presents an outstanding variety of live performances.
