Mackinaw City is located at the Northern tip of Michigan’s lower peninsula in Cheboygan County and Emmet County. Fort Michilimackinac, the Old Mackinac Lighthouse and Mill Creek are major tourist Attractions: amusement parks, casinos, farms & mills, historic sites, lighthouses, museums, tours, wineries, zoos, planetariums, and waterfalls.. Numerous motels, resorts and restaurants are available in the city to accommodate tourists. Three ferry boat services operate from the city to provide access to Mackinac Island. The Mackinaw Bridge provides access to Michigan’s upper peninsula. The village was incorporated in 1882. Population: 875. Village Offices: 102 S. Huron Ave., Mackinaw City, MI 49701. (231) 436-5351. Jean Nicolet was sent here in 1634 by Samuel Champlain to explore the country and to make peace with the Indians. It became a fur trading post in 1673 and one of the sites of Fort Michilimackinac, 1712-1781. In 1857, Edgar Conkling and Asbury M. Searles, as trustees of the proprietors of Mackinaw lands, had the village platted by R. C. Phillips. George W. Stimson is credited with founding the present village in 1870. General storekeeper Louis J. Willets became its first postmaster on April 25, 1871. It's name was shortened to Mackinaw on November 22, 1894, but was restored to Mackinaw City on December 19, 1935. The coming through of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad in 1881 guaranteed the success of the community. Incorporated as a village in 1882.
